HemoHIM, a new challenge in the health functional food market

4 domestic patents, patents registered in the US, Japan and Europe

HemoHIM is developed by the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute, produced by Kolmar BNH, and distributed by Atomy. Sales in 2009 were around 9 billion won, but in 2018 it exceeded 181.9 billion won. In 2019, 175.4 billion won was sold. Atomy announced that the cumulative domestic sales of HemoHIM by 2019 were 1.1305 trillion won. Jo Seong-gi, a immunobiologist, who led the development of HemoHIM, said in an interview with [The Economist], «HemoHIM is a food that can help the body’s hematopoietic, immune, and regenerative tissue functions operate smoothly.» Hematopoiesis refers to the production of blood cells. The immune system also comes into play here. It is explained that basics such as running are important to be good at soccer, but hematopoiesis corresponds to the basics. Dr. Cho Seong-gi began to pay attention to ‘immunity’ when he saw cancer patients with low immunity. Dr. Cho worked at the Atomic Energy Hospital, which at the time was an organization belonging to the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute. In particular, it was famous for its cancer-specialized hospital. He said he started the study by watching patients who had undergone chemotherapy with radiation suffer from weakened immunity. He researched products that can help improve immune function by combining various herbal ingredients such as Angelica Radix, Cnidium Officinale, and Peonia Japonica. HemoHIM is a product released after about six years of research, animal testing, and clinical trials. HemoHIM has registered four patents in Korea, including a herbal composition for enhancing immunity, hematopoietic donation and radiation protection, a manufacturing method thereof, and a functional food for hematopoiesis, immune function enhancement and radiation protection. In 2003, patents were registered in four European countries, including Germany, England, Italy, and France, as well as in Japan and the United States. However, the process from development to sales was not all smooth. It was not an easy task to develop and sell health functional foods at the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute. The Atomic Energy Research Institute solved this problem by establishing a ‘research company’, Sun Biotech Co., Ltd., jointly with Kolmar Korea, a cosmetics company, in 2004. Kolmar Korea provided funds and the Atomic Energy Research Institute contributed technology.

Dr. Jo Seong-gi, Immunobiology – “Healthy blood cells must be made to improve immunity”

Dr. Cho Seong-gi said that while working at the nuclear power hospital, his concerns about the immune system grew. In particular, he began his research by watching patients who had undergone chemotherapy with radiation suffer from weakened immunity.

What does HemoHIM mean?

“The name contains the meaning of a product that can help with hematopoiesis, immunity, and modulation functions. First, I thought of the name HIM, but I couldn’t use it because it already had a registered name. After contemplation, to emphasize the hematopoietic function once more, we named it HemoHIM by attaching the word Hemo.”

What motivated you to develop HemoHIM?

“While working at a nuclear power hospital, I saw patients undergoing chemotherapy. I had a hard time with my immune system, and later suffered from other problems than ‘cancer’. ‘Isn’t it possible that not only cancer patients but also people with weak bodies will have problems due to low immunity?’ started with a question, and started developing it with the thought that it would be nice if there was a product that could help improve immunity.

Which function did you pay more attention to, hematopoiesis or immunity?

“You are right about a product developed with the goal of helping to improve immunity. But the basis of the immune system is hematopoiesis. Immunity can be improved only when healthy blood cells are made properly. This is why we developed it to help with hematopoietic function.”

Is there a reason why you insisted on herbal medicines such as angelica root, cnidium, and white peony as ingredients for HemoHIM?

“Since it was a product for people with weakened immune functions and weak bodies, we had to find a non-toxic substance. At the time of development, we experimented with 42 herbal ingredients and herbs one by one, and tried to find herbs that could create a synergistic effect when combining various ingredients. Even good food can be ineffective or poisonous if eaten all at once. The ingredients I found were Angelica Radix, Cnidium Officinale, and Peonia Japonica Reporter Lee Byung-hee.
